Videos online

I loved YouTube, I've never been able to access it at home on my PC, so it was good to discover it here at work. Loved the Masterchef video as I've never seen the show-looked like fun. Was good to see Laurel Dingle present the Music Queensland video.
I think we could certainly make more use of YouTube here at the library. Perhaps we could video events and podcast them on our website?
Almost time to start work so I will sign out and find some good old seventies DISCO to bop to, oh maybe not the other staff are starting to arrive :(

Google galore

Google Translate:
I've been translating words from Google for ages, but translating a whole website is very useful. We can no longer change the characters on our library webpages for the public which has been very frustrating for our visitors. Now we can direct them to Google Translate and they can translate whatever page they are using.
Google Books:
I looked at The Iliad by Homer, the whole book is available as a PDF! I didn't have time to look up other titles but think this could be a very useful tool for out of print books- maybe in the future we won't need as many interlibrary loans?
IGoogle:
I set up my page and it looks nice but it would be great if you could add your own websites not just feeds, for example have Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, weather, tidetimes etc all on one page as gadgets not as favourites.
I really enjoyed Test Drive No.5 see you next week,

Firefox ADD ons

I was beside myself when I saw COOLIRIS (photographic add-on), and loaded it onto my PC (took hours). Unfortunately I can't get it to work on my computer, I read some of the reviews and it seems that the quality of the photos is not good anyway. Very dissappointed,

Google Chrome vs Internet Explorer vs Firefox

Well I found the video comparing the browsers VERY interesting. Internet Explorer, the browser that we use at the library for the public and staff rated the lowest.
I downloaded Google Chrome & Firefox @ home to see what all the fuss is about. I'm on dial-up so this took forever....
I've been using all 3 for the past week, I don't really have a lot of time to compare them properly, however I'll use the following example.
I tried to load photos onto Facebook, and it was taking forever and playing up as per usual on Internet Explorer. So I tried it on Google Chrome and it wanted me to download a new version of JAVA. I decided against that and tried it with Firefox, and it automatically loaded the version of Java for me that I needed and VOILA I loaded my photos!
I also like the layout on Facebook better with GC & FF.
I will continue to experiment but I think I'll use Firefox from now on for Facebook at least, I think Google Chrome is fast but not 'up to speed' in other areas.
I'm really happy to have learnt this thanks State Library!

Podcasting party

I like the State Library of NSW podcasts, they are very user friendly, I can see how useful they would be to Sunshine Coast Libraries. We could podcast our author events then all the borrowers who missed out may listen via the website!
Some podcasts open easily by clicking on 'listen' others ask you to subscribe and others don't open at all! Tried to open Gavin's podcast but no luck.
Have to open the library now, I will attempt to create a podcast and list my favourite podcasts another day.

Mashups

I also liked the video on Mashups even if the guy did talk very fast- it was very interesting.
LOVE the New York Public library mashups comparing 'then and now' this would be really cool for the Sunshine Coast.
Portwiture was my favourite of the mashup awards, but they were all related to Twitter, finding Twitter rather boring but a few of us are determined to start tweeting each other.
The Google Map I've added is of Kukak Bay which is a beautiful little place in Alaska that I fell in love with.
Stay tuned for my amazing Podcast might even sing!:)

Online applications and tools OR Google docs vs Zoho

Well we had a few technical issues watching some of the videos, they wouldn't open on my PC at home and we couldn't get sound on the Google Docs in plain english presentation here at work at the library.
The Geo greeting was really cool, not sure if I'd actually send it to anyone though?...
I found Google docs quite boring but practical. The applications in Zoho looked more exciting especially the Facebook application. However I doubt if I would ever use either of them, for now I'm just happy to use a USB stick if I want to save a file but I can see the value for web conferences and collaboration with others users.

Brown bear and salmon

Brown bear and salmon

Anyway great shot, I've been to the Katmai National Park, I just arrived too early in the summer to view the bears catching the salmon. One of my major regrets in life, I still want to go back one day and see it.

How much can a koala bear?

Queens Birthday holiday June 8 2009

YES I know there are always koalas around the National Park (Noosa) however you don't often see them crawl down the tree, scamper across the ground, climb another small tree and eat gum leaves within 5 feet of a huge group of tourists for hours... It was v exciting for the tourists.

Del.icio.us, Technorati, and Library Thing.

Well I've added my delicious bookmarks to my blog. I probably won't log into my delicious or bloglines to read the feeds but if I keep up with this blog I will read them on here in one central place.
I found Technorati a bit boring but I just LOVE Library Thing.
Was chuffed to see NoosaBookClubs LibraryThing by our very own Noosa Library mentioned in Mary's blog, go MOS! I love that Kingston Library has Library thing built into their library catalogue, with links to reviews and similar authors, I'm all for this, when are we going to have it on ours?????.
I have also created a Library Thing account and added a link to the 11 books (and counting) that I have chosen as favourites.

Twitterbug

Today when I was on the Reference desk a borrower asked me if I knew anything about Twitter!! Well I said YES of course and was able to tell her all about it, including logging into my account and showing her what I had written and advising her how to create an account.
It gave me a real buzz and I told her I had only just learnt about Twitter. She was very gracious and explained to me that one of her closest friends is very hard to keep in touch with because she travels endlessly and only communicates online. Her friend asked her to join Twitter, and even though she might not want to have lots of followers at least she can log on occasionally, see what her friend is up to and send her a message.

RSS and Bloglines

Well I've finally managed to add RSS feeds to my blog. I created an account with bloglines and I also used Google Reader. It would be nice if all of the feeds you added to bloglines could just be transferred to your blog with one click!!! I'm going to regularly read the feeds that I've added here and on my bloglines. I'm particularly looking for bestsellers and new titles but most of the blogs appear to be from the US. I've added First Tuesday Book Club which includes a video link to the current episode and Publishers Weekly: best sellers news. I think the public would benefit from having access to these RSS feeds on our library website or on a library blog.

I like the Powerhouse Museum’s Photo of the Day blog, however I still prefer to 'browse' FLICKR to look for photos. There are blogs for So you think you can dance 2009 (US version) which has just started in the US, however I want to wait until it is aired here before I add the RSS feed so I don't know who wins in advance.

Social networking OR Facebook vs Twitter

I've been using Facebook for almost a year now and I'm sort of obsessed. I see it as a way to catch up with old friends. I've caught up with a lot of friends and non friends from primary school from Tewantin State School from the seventies. Its been great and we even had a reunion of people who had lived in Noosa for a long time last year that was organised by Facebook (FB). I've also found (or they have found me) old friends that I have lost touch with and probably would never have seen again. I look at it this way, I've got 96 friends on FB who I would never have time to catch up with. At least you get to see what they are up to and look at photos of their life, and send them the odd message or comment. I have an American friend who was very hard to keep in touch with when we only had email. Now that we are both on FB it is much easier. It doesn't stop me socialising in person with my friends but it helps catch up with others.
On FB you can add status updates as often as you like to let people know what you are thinking or goind. Twitter appears to be like one neverending status update or 'tweet' as they call them.
You have probably noticed from my blog that I'm a 'visual' person which is why I like Facebook and the blog as you can illustrate what you say with a photo. It was very interesting to read on the SLQ blog: 5 impressive mashups of Twitter & Flickr:
http://mashable.com/2009/05/11/twitter-flickr-mashups/
It looks like a lot of work has gone into meshing Twitter & Flickr so it is more like a blog or FB. Flickr is owned by Yahoo, not sure who FB is owned by but I'd say they are competing against each other.
A lot of people are starting to talk about Twitter, although FB is becoming more popular every day. I didn't like My Space, I'm not sure if it is losing popularity, but I don't know anyone who has an account.
I will write more when I find someone to tweet!

Twitter

Its not much fun if I just 'tweet' myself, is there anyone out there I can follow so I can practice using this, Wheelgirl what is your URL???
My username is twittingloud.

Wikis

Well I'm already familiar with Wikis as our library has its own wiki and I've used Wikipedia. Most universities don't approve of students citing Wikipedia. When I was still studying it was in its early days, however there is so much more information on there now. I am often directed to Wikipedia from Google when searching for titles in a fiction series that we do not have on our catalogue.

Of the 3 wikis you asked us to 'discover' I like SLQ's own: Slq library 2.0: Emerging Media and New Technology Wiki. I found this useful for the next test drive lesson on social networking and I've bookmarked it here at home so I can return to it at a later date.
Howzat? There was nothing about dancing or music or photography in my blog, oops...think again.

Oh Behave!

Well I love FLICKR so much I can get past it to do the next testdrive lesson, but I promise I will soon. There are so many good photos on there, I'm going to put some of my travel photos on there, so I've been spending my time thinking about that. I'm also half way through Breaking dawn by Stephenie Meyer and I can put it down, so I'm hoping to have it finished tonight.
I will move on to the Wiki lesson soon,

Mamma Mia

No way SYTYCD has finished what will I do with My Sunday/Monday nights ahhhhhhhhhhhh.
Congrats Talia, so happy she won!!

'And what do you think is your ultimate goal? 'I should think a nice
little dance in heaven.'

UNKNOWN Dancer stuck down by polio in 1953

SYTYCD Final tonight

Go Talia and Amy!! I'd really like Talia to win as she is the first classical dancer on the Australian or American version to actually be any good at all of the other styles. The other ballerinas usually don't take to the hip hop etc. AND because ballerinas have the best technique then that makes her amazing. I actually prefer contemporary dance to classical so I LUV Amy, so I would be happy if either of them won, as long as it is not Charlie or Ben=we don't need another Jack representing us in America. Im sure NONE of you are really that interested haha. If you are prove me wrong and make a comment:)

Ephesus Library

Built in 117AD, the library was renovated in 1910, and the statues I took photos of are copies of the originals that are now in a museum.

See more information below:

I was HYSTERICALLY excited when I got there, being a librarian, and everyone else thought I was crazy as I ran around taking endless photos as I always do. It was so beautiful, and the oldest standing library (even though its been renovated) I will ever see.

So here is a photo of me outside the library, I didn't want to add it to FLICKR as the composition isn't very good so its just between us wink wink.

Celsus Library, Ephesus, Turkey

I hope this is going to my blog and not a blog on Flickr!!!
It has taken me ages but I've added 5 of my photos on Flickr, what an adventure!! I'm so into it now, and would love to add more of my photos. I'll stop talking now in case this doesn't go to my blog! If it does there are a set of 5 photos I took in September 1998 in Ephesus Turkey at the Celsus Library, (named Celsus after Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus). More about the history of the library in my next post stay tuned...

You should be dancing

Well I've added my first photo! Hope you like it, I don't have many photos of me dancing from that era because not many people had cameras. I'm sure we did but we just didn't take many photos....
You will notice I have purposely cut off my arms, I don't look very graceful. My dad described me in my first ballet concert as an 'elephant'. I like to think I'm a disco elephant: no technique but lots of enthusiasm!! haha. All I was worried about was looking good for the photo, not keeping my leg straight or pointing my toes, nothing much has changed:)
So I have a heap of quotes I want to add, and I noticed on some other blogs they had a big box around their favourite quote can somebody help me with that? Is anybody out there?

So you think you can dance?

Oh my god did anyone catch last nights show? I thought it was supposed to be the final, but we have to wait another week.
Go Tahlia and Amy! Would love a girl to win this time and Tahlia is from the Queensland Ballet so she is a local girl, and she is a beautiful dancer as is Amy...
